How to do a 30-second stand test at home

A stand test is the simplest measurement in this whole area: you stand as still as you can for half a minute while something records how much you move. The test is easy. Doing it the same way every time is the hard part, and it's the only part that decides whether your numbers are worth looking at.

Before you start: set up once, reuse forever

Everything that varies between tests shows up in the result and looks like a change in your balance. So the goal is to freeze as many variables as you can, once, and then never think about them again.

Safety first, genuinely

If you feel unsteady, dizzy or lightheaded at any point, stop, hold on to something, and sit down. Don't test alone if you're not confident on your feet — have someone in the room. If you've had a fall or you're worried about your balance, talk to a clinician before adding balance testing or training to your routine.

The stance

The most common version is a quiet stance with feet together: heels close, toes lightly apart, arms hanging relaxed at your sides. That's a good default, because it's difficult enough to produce a measurable amount of sway but stable enough to be safe.

Detail matters more than it sounds:

Don't fight the sway. Let the corrections happen and stop trying to win — tensing up usually produces more motion, not less.

Making it harder, later

Once feet-together becomes trivially easy, you have two dials. Narrow the base: move to a semi-tandem stance (one heel beside the other foot's big toe), then a full tandem stance (heel directly in front of toe), then eventually a single-leg hold. Remove vision: close your eyes, which takes away an entire input channel and is a substantially harder test.

Two rules about progressing. First, change one dial at a time. Second — and this is the one people ignore — a harder stance is a different test. Its scores are not comparable to your old ones. If you switch, you're starting a new baseline, so keep running your original stance alongside it for a few weeks if you want the history to stay readable.

The thirty seconds

Start your timer, or start the test in the app, and then:

  1. Settle into position and take one normal breath before the recording begins. Don't start mid-fidget.
  2. Fix your gaze on your mark and keep it there. Eyes wandering around the room adds motion.
  3. Stand. Let your ankles do their small corrections without trying to suppress them.
  4. Don't talk, don't count out loud, don't check your watch. Looking at your wrist mid-test is the single most common way people ruin a wrist-measured result.
  5. When it ends, hold position for a beat rather than immediately stepping away.

Thirty seconds is long enough to capture a stable picture of your sway and short enough that fatigue doesn't creep in and change what you're measuring halfway through. If you want more confidence in a single day's result, run two or three tests with a short rest between them rather than one very long one.

Building a baseline

Your first test is not your balance. It's one sample from a distribution you haven't seen yet. Treat the first week or two as calibration:

The most useful habit is jotting down anything unusual — new shoes, a cold, a hard workout the day before, a long flight. When a number looks strange, that note usually explains it, and you'll save yourself a week of unnecessary worry.

Five mistakes that quietly wreck your data

  1. Testing in different places. Kitchen tile one day, bedroom carpet the next. This alone can move a score more than a month of training does.
  2. Looking at your wrist during the test. It moves your arm, your head and your gaze all at once. Wait for the haptic or the timer.
  3. Testing right after exercise. Post-workout balance is genuinely worse, and it isn't the number you meant to record.
  4. Chasing a single bad score. One low reading is noise. Re-test tomorrow rather than immediately retrying until you get a number you like — repeated retries bias your whole history upward.
  5. Changing the stance without noting it. Feet together in March and tandem stance in April is two datasets, not one trend.
